Three-Horse Percheron Hitch

PEN AND INK

Three-Horse Percheron Hitch.jpg

My father, Don Feick, his father Ed, his brother Earl and his uncle Clayton Shantz were all champion plowmen at both the county and International plowing matches. They all plowed with horses. Dad’s grandfather Wendell Shantz was part owner of a popular registered Percheron stallion. Wendell travelled far and wide with this horse to service Percheron mares. So dandy Percherons, like this three-horse hitch, were a must for the family. Here is Ed Feick at the plow with brother Herb Feick and a friend during a plowing match. Three horse hitches at matches were not common. All the Feicks liked to win and show off a bit.
